Autumn vacations at Slot Loevestein This autumn vacation, from October 11 to 26, there is plenty to do at Slot Loevestein. Explore the fortress and learn musketry, explode gunpowder in the Kruittoren and take an iconic photo in Hugo de Groot's coffin. Listen to one of the many stories from the history of the sturdy castle. The highlight this vacation is the big annual knights' tournament.
NATURAL!
"Of course!" is this year's theme of History Month. Between three rivers lies Slot Loevestein, a place where water has defined the boundaries for centuries. At Loevestein during the autumn vacations, you'll dive into the extraordinary genesis of this iconic castle. For more than six hundred years, people have been fighting the water here - and living with it. What once began as a marshy swamp became farmland for monks. Later, Loevestein grew into a sturdy fortress, with moats, moats, ramparts and floodgates to keep the water out. After the great floods of 1995, the river partially regained its freedom: it now once again follows the natural course of the seasons. During the autumn vacation, take a step back in time and discover how Loevestein, surrounded by water, grew into an impregnable fortress. A place with one eternal friend and enemy: water. Come listen, watch and experience how water shaped the story of Loevestein. An experience full of history, nature and wonder - for young and old! The story is told several times a day, just like the escape story of Hugo de Groot.
