Sunday, September 14, Open Monument Day, the Lambertus Church opens its doors to the public.
History
The oldest church of Raamsdonk - now located across the Maasroute - was founded before 1273 by the Bishop of Liege, who held all rights until the fourteenth century. The Lambert Church must therefore be seen as one of the oldest and northernmost supports of the diocese, which was very extensive at that time.
The history of Lambert Church dates back to about the year 1150, but remains of the church building from the earlier period have not been found so far, except for the base of a natural stone baptismal font.
An older building stood on the site of the present church, whose wall remains have been excavated, dating back to 1275. This was a hall church of about 100 by 25 meters without a tower. Around 1350 this little church was provided with a tower and about a hundred years later with a new choir and two transepts.
Presumably in the year 1502 the nave was also renewed, giving the Lambertus Church its present form.
Movements
From 1150 to 1610 the church was Catholic. Then the church was taken possession of by the Protestants. The church went through all the splits within the church.
