Around 1786, Thomas Schattelijn built a new residence in Louis XVI style on the site of the former breweries "De Bel," "Den Ancker" and "De Posthoorn." In 1809, King Louis Napoleon stayed here as a guest of the city of Geertruidenberg. In 1833, the complex was sold to the Department of War and furnished as barracks and military hospital. After 1920, the building had various functions until the municipality of Geertruidenberg purchased it in the 1980s. Only brewery "De Bel" was preserved; "De Posthoorn" was destroyed by fire in 1934. After restoration, the building was given a cultural destination (De Schattelijn) in 1989.
