A look behind the scenes Theater De Leest in Waalwijk

On a quiet Thursday afternoon, I met up with Sander, the director and programmer of Theater De Leest in Waalwijk. As I walk in, the theater is quiet. No movie is playing, there’s no performance on the schedule, and the lobby is empty. Yet the magic of the theater is palpable everywhere. This is where it all happens. And that becomes even more apparent when Sander starts talking about everything that goes on behind the scenes.

Many visitors to Theater De Leest only see the end result: a full house, a beautiful set, and a performance that seems polished down to the last detail. But behind those few hours on stage lies a world of preparation, technology, and teamwork.

"A lot of people think we don't start working here until 7:30 p.m.," Sander says with a laugh. "But for a performance, a truck often pulls up as early as 10 a.m. That’s when we start setting up the set, adjusting the lighting and sound, and working with the troupe’s crew. By the time the audience arrives, we’ve already put in a full day’s work."

That setup takes place out of sight of visitors. Technicians spend hours ensuring that every light, every microphone, and every piece of scenery is in exactly the right place. As soon as the applause dies down, a new process begins: everything is taken down and loaded up for the next destination.

Hidden technology above the stage

During our conversation, we also take a look behind the scenes. That’s where it really becomes clear just how much technology goes into a performance.

Sander points up at a massive structure above the stage. “We have about fifty pipes hanging here, to which lighting, curtains, and set pieces are attached. These days, it’s all automated, but back in the day, we used ropes. Those old ropes are actually still hanging here.”

The corridors behind the stage are just as remarkable. As we walk past the dressing rooms, I immediately notice the autographs that performers have left on the walls over the years. The walls are covered with the names of famous comedians, musicians, and actors. I can’t believe my eyes!

More than just performances

Theater De Leest Incidentally, the theater isn’t just alive on theater nights. During the day, the venue is regularly rented out to businesses, cultural organizations, schools, and dance clubs. Even funerals and memorial services are sometimes held there.

"A lot of people think the theaters are empty during the day," says Sander. "But most of the time, we're actually very busy. It's a puzzle every day to make sure everything runs smoothly."

That versatility is also reflected in the programming. As the programmer, Sander puts together the lineup himself, consciously seeking a mix of well-known names, audience favorites, and more surprising or artistic productions.

"I program some shows for a broad audience. But I also think it’s important to make room for performances that might be a little less conventional. It’s that combination that makes a theater program truly interesting."

Hospitality as a calling card

Theater De Leest ’s popularity is evident not only from its attendance figures. Over the years, the theater has been nominated several times for awards within the Dutch theater world.

According to Sander, the theater’s strength lies primarily in its personal atmosphere. “Performers often tell us how much they enjoy being here. The theater is easy to navigate, the technical aspects are well organized, and everyone feels welcome. I think that personal approach is one of our greatest strengths.”

Visitors also appreciate that intimate atmosphere. Although the audience comes mainly from the region, people from places like Tilburg also find their way to the theater. A major added benefit of Theater De Leest compared to a theater in a big city? The option of free parking right out front in the evenings!

A Special Anniversary Year

Theater De Leest also has something extra to celebrate this year. November 26 marks exactly thirty years since the theater opened its doors at its current location.

When the building opened in 1996, some people thought the theater was even too big for Waalwijk. Now, the opposite has proven to be true. “We’re actually almost outgrowing it,” says Sander. “That shows just how much of a need there is for culture and community.”

To celebrate its anniversary, Theater De Leest is working on a special original production: the musical *Lief en Leest*. The story brings together two worlds that are inextricably linked to Waalwijk: the theater and the shoe industry. The musical will premiere during the anniversary season in July 2027.

In addition, a special exhibition featuring portraits of performers and their stage shoes will open on November 26. Some of the photos are already on display on the theater’s first floor.

If you look closely, you’ll also discover that Waalwijk’s history as a shoe-making town is evident in many parts of the building. For example, notice the leather accents in the interior and the eye-catching bar on the ground floor, which is shaped like a shoe.

A place for everyone

Perhaps what stands out most during my visit is that Theater De Leest is much more than just a building with a stage. It’s a gathering place where thousands of people come together every year for relaxation, inspiration, and extraordinary stories.

Whether you’re looking for a family show, a cabaret night, a movie, or a musical, Sander says there’s always something for everyone to enjoy.

And once you’ve seen everything that goes on behind the scenes, you may never look at a trip to the theater the same way again. Because even before the curtain rises, the magic of the performance has actually already begun.
