Hugo de Groot walking route stage 3
Hugo de Groot became world famous thanks to his escape from Slot Loevestein. On March 22, 1621, Elsje van Houweningen helped him escape to Antwerp after nearly two years of captivity. More than 400 years later, you can relive the first part of his escape route.
Elsje accompanied the book chest with Hugo de Groot in it from Slot Loevestein to Gorinchem. Here Hugo disguised himself as a bricklayer and managed to get to Waalwijk undetected. From there Hugo fled on a cart of a local drayman in the direction of Antwerp.
The escape route from Waalwijk to Antwerp probably went through Loon op Zand, Tilburg, Riel, Alphen, Baarle, Hoogstraten, Sint-Lenaarts, Sint-Job-In-'t-Goor and Merksem.
