The Churches Route

'n Rondje durtrappe' along the Catholic churches in our municipality. KP51: Johannes de Doperkerk in Kaatsheuvel is our largest church. Designed by Cornelis van Hoof. This neo-Gothic church was consecrated in 1912 and restored in 2009. Catholic churches usually face east. However, this church faces north. This is to "show off" towards the Protestant community in Sprang-Capelle. In the evening it is beautifully illuminated.

After KP22, we see our Ice Rink on the right. Just about our entire village learned to skate here. The Ice Rink was dug by hand in the crisis years 1929-1934. So for us a nostalgic place! Feel free to step off at KP32, at the "Leugenbaankske", to "neighbor" a bit and enjoy the view of moors and dunes.

On to Loon op Zand! After KP37 you will see the oldest church: Sint Jans Onthoofding (1394 - right photo). The first structure was a Romanesque hall church. Then the Gothic choir was built. In the 15th century the side aisles. After the Reformation in 1648, the church fell into disrepair when it came into Protestant hands. The church was used for anything and everything and became impoverished. The tower blew off in 1800. When the church reverted to the Loon Catholics in 1821, everything was repaired. So was the damage after World War II.

From Loon op Zand , we pedal toward De Moer, KP38. Like the Sint Jan in Kaatsheuvel, the neo-Gothic Sint-Joachimkerk (1902) was designed by Cornelis van Hoof. Pastor Kamp consecrated the church. Later he also realized the worship to St. Anna. In 2025, the church was withdrawn from worship.

After KP24 you cycle through rural areas to Kaatsheuvel. You can turn off at the first intersection of the route to the church H.H. Martyrs of Gorcum (1895); Sweenstraat, Erasstraat. It is a neo-Romanesque basilical cruciform church, built as a bastion against the advancing Protestant faith from the north. From here you can already see the spires of St. John's and cycle right back to the center, KP51.
