In their new film, The Peasants, the makers of Loving Vincent tell the story of peasant girl Jagna, who tries to find her own way in 19th century Poland, despite the opposition of her envious fellow villagers.
When free-spirited peasant girl Jagna is forced to marry the much older wealthy peasant Boryna, she must let go of her love for his son Antek. Her life increasingly becomes a struggle for her own independence in a village full of jealousy, gossip, feuds and an entrenched patriarchy. The makers of Loving Vincent once again drew inspiration from works of art for their new film, The Peasants. In this film adaptation of the Nobel Prize for Literature-winning book Chlopi by Władysław Reymont, the hand-painted images are based on works from the 19th and 20th centuries by such Polish artists as Józef Chelmonski, Ferdynand Ruszczyc and Leon Wyczólkowski.
