In the Middle Ages, Kaatsheuvel had something worth a lot of money: peat soil. From that peat soil could be made into peat; an important fuel.

The peat was excavated in roughly equal-sized blocks for drying. This is how it became peat.

To easily count the blocks of peat devised a system. Right: peat!
