Originally a small road ran here. On the south side were some small houses, some of which are still present.
On the right we see a former factory building. From 1909 to 1920 the steam shoe factory of the Schoenmakers brothers was located here.
In 1910 a strike broke out at this shoe factory. 26 workers laid off work as a result of tensions within the Loon community, especially in the socio-economic field. Home-based shoemakers had to work long hours for meager wages. Housing and health were poor and there were abuses such as forced shoplifting, high poverty and alcohol abuse. In addition, there were all kinds of frictions between supporters and opponents of the time-honored craft and modern machine-made shoe and leather manufacturing, Catholic and neutral trade unions fighting each other, dignified families in control and newcomers from outside the Loon community.
