It puts (no) sod into the dike
If something does not put sod into the dike, it means it is of little use. The saying originated from the fact that people put sod (large pieces of grass) against a dike to try to prevent a breach of the dike. You can also say "that makes things better," in which case you mean that what you do makes sense.
