It’s 1985, and Vincent, who’s almost thirteen, is growing up in a Parisian family where tensions run high. Against a backdrop of ’80s music, fashion, and nostalgia, he experiences his first crush and discovers that growing up can be quite complicated at times.
"Juste une illusion" is a heartwarming comedy in which nostalgia and a teenager in love bring the 1980s back to life. Directors Nakache and Toledano return with a feel-good movie that, much like *The Intouchables* and *Hors Normes*, doesn’t shy away from social issues but, above all, shows just how hilarious everyday life can be.
It’s 1985: The Cure and Imagination are battling it out on the charts, while Kohl and Mitterrand are on the world stage. Vincent, nearly thirteen years old, is growing up in a Paris suburb, where not only the global economy but also his family is in crisis. His father, Yves (Louis Garrel), has lost his job but doesn’t dare tell anyone. His mother, Sandrine (Camille Cottin), after years as a secretary, longs for a more challenging job. These tensions regularly erupt into heated arguments. As Vincent tries to find his place within a family that is drifting apart, he experiences his first great love and takes his first steps toward adulthood.
Nakache and Toledano present a cinematic ode to the music, fashion, and radio game shows of the 1980s, but above all, a personal story that transcends time. A teenager on a journey of self-discovery, and parents who must rediscover each other.
