Proverb route - A scary street
If you acted like a soldier in the winding alley, you might be sweating from running and hiding. Not only soldiers who fled through the alleyways, but also criminals who used to arrive at this street were pretty hot!
Terrified criminals in Engstraat
In the Middle Ages, criminals were sentenced at the castle (stop 8). Through this street they had to walk to the town hall (stop 1): here the public execution took place. The criminals were tied to a pillory and people were allowed to throw eggs and rotten fruit at them.... Imagine: in the distance you can hear all the noise, you still have to cross this street and then you will be pelted and booed.... That's why this street is called the Engstraat!
