In the Footsteps of the Bende van de Witte Veer

We’re going back to North Brabant around 1720—a time when poverty was rampant and a notorious band of robbers made the region unsafe: The Bende van de Witte Veer.

During this 43-kilometer cycling route, you’ll delve into the story of gang leader Swarte Johannes and his accomplices. You’ll cycle past locations where, according to the stories, the gang left its mark. Among other stops, you’ll pass the mysterious Witte Kasteel in Loon op Zand and cycle through the Loonse and Drunense Duinen National Park.

Keep your eyes peeled along the way... Do you see a white feather lying around somewhere? Who knows, maybe the White Feather Gang is closer than you think.

Follow in the footsteps of the Scottish Highlanders

World War II also left its mark on the Langstraat. On the Scottish Highlanders Liberation Routes, you’ll cycle past locations that played a significant role in the region’s liberation. There are routes through Waalwijk, Heusden, and Loon op Zand. Along the way, you’ll discover personal stories of courage, loss, fear, and hope. The routes follow in the footsteps of the Scottish soldiers who marched through the Brabant countryside in the fall of 1944.

The route through Waalwijk is 35 kilometers long; in Heusden, you’ll cycle 38 kilometers; and the route through Loon op Zand is 51 kilometers. Whichever route you choose, along the way you’ll literally pause to reflect on the history of the places you’re cycling through.

Some routes invite you not only to explore the surroundings, but also to pause for a moment. The Memorial Walking Trail stretches 13 kilometers through Geertruidenberg, Raamsdonksveer, and Raamsdonk. The route is intended as a walking trail, but can also be traveled by bike.

Along the way, you’ll pass liberation monuments, cemeteries, memorials, and Stolpersteine. Each memorial has its own story. Together, they serve as a reminder of events and people we must never forget.
