It’s a sunny summer morning as I drive through the historic streets of Heusden Vesting toward Jachthaven De Wiel . The fortress is slowly coming to life, and the first walkers are already enjoying the tranquility along the water. On the edge of the marina lies Camperplaats Heusden, where I’ve arranged to meet Rein, the owner of the RV park.
As soon as you arrive at the site, it’s immediately clear why so many RV travelers choose to stay here. In front of me, the Meuse glistens in the morning sun. Across the river, ships sail by, and behind me, the historic towers of Heusden Vesting rise above the landscape.
Throughout the season, guests from the Netherlands and abroad enjoy a stay at this unique location. But how did the idea for the RV park actually come about?
"We were looking to the future," says Rein. "The boating and harbor season is getting shorter and shorter and is heavily dependent on the weather. That’s why we started thinking about recreational activities that would attract visitors not just in the summer, but actually all year round."
That search led him to the growing world of RV tourism.
"We saw how popular traveling by camper has become among colleagues and at other recreational destinations. That inspired us to develop Camperplaats Heusden . In doing so, we thought not only of our own business, but also of Heusden as a destination. We’d like to contribute to recreational activities that attract visitors 365 days a year. That brings vibrancy to the town and is also good for local businesses."
As we walk across the grounds, one thing immediately stands out: the space. While many RV parks are designed primarily for practicality, this one feels remarkably spacious and peaceful.
“That’s also something we deliberately chose,” says Rein. “Our RV park is about 120 square meters. Guests really have plenty of space here to stay comfortably. Combined with its location on the Maas, that makes for a very special experience.”
And that location is perhaps the biggest perk of all. From the RV park, you can walk to the fortress in just a few minutes, all while staying surrounded by nature and right by the water.
"I think that’s what makes us truly unique," says Rein. "You’re right on the Maas with a beautiful view of the water, but at the same time, you can walk right into the historic city center to enjoy a drink on a terrace, visit a museum, or browse the shops."
Rein notices every day that guests appreciate this combination.
"Most of the positive feedback is about the location by the water and how clean and well-maintained everything is. We pay a lot of attention to the restrooms and amenities. We want guests to feel welcome from the very first moment."
That appreciation is also reflected online.
"In reviews, we regularly read how people enjoy the view, the peace and quiet, and the cleanliness of the RV park. Those are wonderful compliments. It shows that the efforts you put in are appreciated."
As we walk across the grounds, a camper van from Germany pulls in. It confirms what Rein said earlier: the camper site attracts an international crowd.
"That might just be the best part of this job," he says enthusiastically. "We meet people from all kinds of countries. Every guest brings their own story with them. Some have been on the road for weeks, while others are just making a quick stopover. That means no two days are ever the same."
According to Rein, guests not only enjoy the beautiful location, but also everything that Heusden and the surrounding area have to offer.
"From here, you can easily walk right into the fortress, but you can also take beautiful bike rides along the Meuse or explore Brabant’s natural scenery. Many guests tell us that they feel comfortable leaving their RV parked for a day and exploring everything on foot or by bike."
When I ask if he has any special memories of a camper guest, Rein smiles briefly.
"What really sticks with me are the reactions of people arriving here for the first time. Of course, we know ourselves that this is a special place, but it’s still wonderful to see that sense of wonder in our guests."
He points to the view across the water. “Some people step out of their RVs and immediately say, ‘What a beautiful spot you have here.’ That’s always a nice compliment. It makes you realize once again just how special this location really is.”
As I say goodbye and take one last look out over the RV park, I understand exactly what Rein means. The tranquility of the Meuse, the spacious grounds, and the historic charm of Heusden Vesting come together to create a combination you won’t easily find anywhere else.
I can well imagine that anyone traveling by RV who’s looking for a place where water, nature, and history come together will feel right at home here. And perhaps that’s exactly why so many guests are eager to return to Camperplaats Heusden after their first visit.
