3. Discover the fortifications of the impregnable fortress
The walk begins at the model on display at the Tourist Information Center. A professional guide will take you to the ramparts. These ramparts were the reason Heusden was called an impregnable fortress in the 17th century and was also given the title “’tLands Sterckte.”
During the 1-hour-and-45-minute tour, the guide will explain the development and function of the fortifications, as well as the lords of the castle, the militia, mercenaries, and fortified farmers. Along the way, you’ll pass the ramparts, canals, gates, and city walls, which were restored in 1968.
The ramparts feature slopes and stairs, so this tour is not suitable for wheelchair users, people with walkers, strollers, or participants with limited mobility.
