Welcome to the Western Langstraat! This area lies in a special place: the Naad van Brabant. Here the sandy soil slowly changes into clay soil. As if nature is in the middle of an outfit change. This transition causes groundwater to bubble up everywhere. As a result, it is often wet, swampy and sometimes a bit wobbly under your feet. But that is exactly what makes it a top spot for plants, animals and stories waiting to be discovered. Have you already become curious?

Did you know that there used to be a huge layer of peat here? That is actually a kind of plant pancake of old plants that couldn't rot away because everything was so wet. People dug the peat out and used it for fuel. They called it peat: a kind of super old, muddy energy bar for their fireplaces. You also walk through a stroke landscape here. These are very long, narrow strips of land between ditches. Hundreds of years ago, farmers made these to work on. At the edges you often see rows of alder trees. They hold the banks firmly so they don't wash away. So look around carefully on the walk. This landscape is full of old stories ... and you're hiking right through it!
