This route, right through Rijen, goes mostly through the Brabant countryside. From De Moer, KP38, you cycle over the Bedrijvenpark to the Wilhelminakanaal, where you pass Sluis II. As ships pass there is plenty to see. From KP39 we set course for Rijen.

Until early last century, the municipality of Gilze and Rijen was surrounded by vast heathlands. In the 16th century, five oak trees stood close together, which together were an important landmark for travelers in the area. They stood near KP19, where a riding school now stands. Previously it was a café-restaurant, brewery and inn.

Gilze en Rijen has always had something to do with the military in the past. After all, the moors lent themselves perfectly to exercises. There was an army camp of 11,000 'Staatse soldaten' in 1732 and in 1831 13,000 soldiers were there to teach the rebellious Belgians a lesson.

In World War II the Germans constructed an airfield. After the liberation in 1944 the British took over and today we know Gilze-Rijen airbase as the largest helicopter base in the Netherlands with 2 runways of almost 2 and 3 km. About 2,000 people work there.

After traffic circle, KP19, we cycle over Vijf Eiken towards Boswachterij Dorst. The ponds were long used as rowing and swimming ponds, but were returned to nature in 2005. Nature lovers can indulge themselves here. From KP88 we cycle through woods and pastures, touch Oosterhout for a moment, drive around Dongen and set course for 's Gravenmoer. From KP05 we cycle along the little river De Donge. It was once the most polluted river in the Netherlands. This due to discharge of chemicals used by the tanneries. The leather was needed for the Langstraat shoe industry.

At KP28 turn right and you will soon see De Martinuskerk on your right. The little Protestant church (photo) dates from the 15th century and is a beautiful example of Gothic architecture. It is still in function. Continue the route between the meadows and through Dongensevaart towards our cozy De Moer. You are welcome in our taverns and on our terraces. Enjoy!
