Huis ter Heide

Landgoed Huis ter Heide, located between Loon op Zand and De Moer, is a hidden gem. You can go for lovely walks in this wetland bird paradise while admiring the noisy frogs and colorful dragonflies. You can also come face to face with Scottish Highlanders, who continue to feed imperturbably. You won't get any closer to nature than this. There are beautiful hiking trails in the area, ranging from 4.5 to 8 kilometers.

  • Nature reserve Huis ter Heide in De Moer

Explore Huis ter Heide estate, a 650-hectare area with a varied landscape in De Moer, near the Efteling. The northern part consists mainly of forest and the southern area of fens and agricultural plots. Discover the white hunting lodge from 1864, after which the estate is named. Enjoy the vistas and the multitude of plant and animal species. Walk the plank path across the Leikeven and spot the many (water) birds.

In the Huis ter Heide nature reserve Scottish Highlanders are used to keep the vegetation in balance. You may encounter these long-haired grazers just along your path. Despite their gentle nature and cute appearance, Scottish Highlanders are not looking forward to a direct confrontation with people (and their pets). Appropriate distance (at least 25 meters) is therefore very important. Walk around them in a wide arc, straight through the woods if necessary when the herd is on the path. Never cross a herd and keep dogs on a leash. If you see a nursing Scottish Highlander with a calf, keep in mind that the protective mother instinctively reacts faster and more fiercely to a threatened situation.

Don't let the above rules deter you from hiking in Huis ter Heide estate, near the Efteling amusement park. With common sense and respect for the animals, you will undoubtedly enjoy the versatility of this nature reserve.

Nature Cemetery Huis ter Heide

Nature Cemetery Huis ter Heide is located on the edge of the nature reserve of the same name. Marvel at the many birds, colorful shrubs, embracing woods and purple-colored heather.

Every second day of the month you can explore nature here. During an informative walk you will hear about nature at the natural cemetery and about natural burial. Prefer to enjoy nature at another time? You can. Everyone is welcome daily between sunrise and sunset.
