You've probably seen them before: those small, gold-colored tiles embedded in the sidewalk in various places in the Netherlands. These are Stolpersteine, German for "Stumbling Stone. The "Stumbling Stone" is a project by German artist Gunter Demnig (Berlin, 1947). The small memorials are placed in front of houses where people lived who were expelled, deported, murdered or driven to suicide by the Nazis. There are more than 61,000 Stolpersteine in as many as 22 countries worldwide. Walk the route and let the history sink in.
