Hugo de Groot bicycle route stage 3

On March 22, 1621, Hugo de Groot fled from Slot Loevestein. After almost two years of captivity, maid Elsje smuggled him in a book chest from Poederoijen to Gorinchem. Dressed as a bricklayer, Hugo went on foot in the direction of Waalwijk. From there he would have fled on the cart of a drayman via Loon op Zand, Tilburg, Riel, Alphen, Baarle, Hoogstraten, Sint-Lenaarts, Sint-Job-In-'t-Goor and Merksem to Antwerp.

Follow in the footsteps of Hugo de Groot with this bicycle route. The second and third stages of this historic escape route pass through De Langstraat region.

This third stage goes from Waalwijk, via Loon op Zand to Tilburg. This bike route crosses the beautiful Loonse and Drunense Dunes and passes through the cozy center of Loon op Zand where it is great to take a break.
