The route starts and ends in Heusden, but can also be started from Woudrichem or any other point along the route.
The two fortified towns arose on a banked embankment along the river. Woudrichem's history goes back to the ninth century. Around 866, Woudrichem is first mentioned as UUalricheshem. Heusden is slightly younger, with the first inhabitants settling there in the twelfth century. Nevertheless, the very first mention of Heusden dates back to 722 as Hunsata Super fluvium Mosam. In 839, this place was destroyed by the Normans.
