Why De Langstraat Is Perfect for a Solo Trip

In my experience, a good destination for a solo trip is safe, easy to navigate, and diverse. That’s exactly why De Langstraat is such a great place to explore on your own. Within a short distance, you’ll find a mix of nature reserves, historic fortified towns, cozy restaurants and bars, and unique attractions.

Plus, the atmosphere is relaxed and warm everywhere you go. Local business owners welcome you with open arms, and residents on the street are happy to point you in the direction of their favorite spots.

Enjoy slow travel in nature

Solo travel isn’t usually about cramming in as much as possible, but rather about consciously savoring the moment. With so much nature, De Langstraat is the ideal place for that.

For example, take a walk through De Loonse en Drunense Duinen and be amazed by the vast sandy plains, forests, and quiet areas. Or go exploring in the Vlijmens Ven, the nature reserve with the most diverse plant species ever recorded in the Netherlands. Spot the protected “pimpernel blue” butterfly and enjoy the view from the lookout point.

Solo Cycling in Brabant

Do you prefer cycling? Then choose one of the many bike routes through the polders, past windmills, and through quaint Brabant villages. Like the 19-kilometer Huis Ter Heide Bike Route. Along the way, you decide where to stop for a cup of coffee, a beautiful view, or a spontaneous photo op.

Don’t forget to stop every now and then along the way to enjoy the peace and quiet and the sounds of nature around you.

Cultural discoveries for one person

I think visiting a museum or taking a historic city walk is perhaps one of the best activities to do on your own. You can look around at your own pace, linger a little longer in certain spots, and fully immerse yourself in the stories behind a place.

Treat yourself to a nice coffee break

A big advantage of traveling solo? You don’t have to ask anyone where to have lunch or where to go for a cup of coffee. So take your time to enjoy that perfect cup of coffee, a delicious lunch, or a slice of cake—this is all yours!

Great places to take a break:

  • The historic market square in Geertruidenberg, where various restaurants and cafes have outdoor seating with views of historic buildings.

  • The center of Heusden, where you’ll find cozy cafes and restaurants nestled among the old fortress walls.

  • Around Raadhuisplein in Waalwijk, you’ll find plenty of great places to eat and drink

Coffee and tea spots to enjoy on your own

  • PLEK in Waalwijk—here you can enjoy a delicious cup of coffee with a slice of (homemade) cake

  • At ’t Wapen van Heusden, overlooking the Vismarkt , you can enjoy a delicious drink, perhaps with a snack or lunch

  • Saskia’s Tea House: fresh tea and homemade cakes in the charming setting of the former manor garden in Geertruidenberg

  • Stop by Bakkertje Deeg, settle down on the tiny patio, and taste the best sausage roll in Brabant

Tip: Bring a book, look around, or make plans for the rest of your day. Not sure where to go? Try striking up a conversation with a local! That’s often how you end up having the best conversations and getting the most surprising tips.
