The beautiful nature reserve is also called the Brabant Sahara. Relax on the enormous sand drifts. The wind has free play there and effortlessly blows your thoughts away, but also ensures that the landscape is constantly changing. That, and the changing seasons, make every visit a new experience. Marvel at the understory trees and enjoy the beautiful view from the dune tops.
Halfway along the route you will see a number of objects that remind you of the explosive past of the small forest area the M.A.St. This former Munitions Ausgabe Stelle of the Germans was blown up on September 5, 1944. With a smartphone you can read more about the bomb craters, the trench and other still visible elements along the route via QR codes.
You might also come across the sheep flock. The sheep keep the heather short and eat away young trees. This is how they keep the area open and the heathland turns a beautiful purple every year in the months of August and September.
Around the dunes you will find cozy catering establishments, including the nature gates, recognizable by the four-meter high key; a great starting point to get informed, discover nature, relax and be nice and active outdoors.
Via an intricate network of hiking nodes you can walk the most beautiful routes, such as this 16 kilometer long walking route from Natuurpoort Van Loon in Loon op Zand, with intermediate stops at the cozy catering establishments Bosch en Duin and De Roestelberg. Simply follow the node numbers on the posts from one numbered node to the next. The route leads you mainly over forest paths, from where you look out over the sandy plains and heathland. Feel free to get off the trail for a while and explore the sand flats.
